Precautions for the use of silica sol

Although silica sol can maintain suspension stability for a long time, some precautions should be taken during storage, otherwise irreversible damage may occur.
(1) Frozen. Ordinary silica sol is an aqueous dispersion of nano silica. When the storage or use temperature of silica sol is too low, it can cause the silica sol to freeze. Once the ordinary silica sol freezes, it will cause irreversible damage. Even if it melts again, flocculation, precipitation, and other phenomena will still occur in the silica sol. This is because during freezing, the formation of ice crystals compresses the nano silica particles of the silica sol, causing them to aggregate and thereby damaging the stability of the silica sol.
(2) Electrolyte effects. Ordinary silica sol is an aqueous dispersion of nano silica, with negative charges on the surface of particles, resulting in repulsion and no agglomeration. This is the fundamental reason for the stability of the silica sol suspension system. Therefore, in the process of use, ordinary silica sol cannot add multivalent salts, because the silicate on the surface of silica sol will combine with multivalent metal ions to generate insoluble salts, which will damage its surface charge structure, resulting in silica sol gel, flocculation, etc.
(3) Cationic substances. Because the surface of silica sol nanoparticles is negatively charged, if cationic substances (such as cationic emulsifiers, multivalent metal ions, etc.) are added to the silica sol system, the silica sol will flocculate and produce irreversible scrap.
(4) Organic macromolecules. If water-soluble organic macromolecules are added to the ordinary aqueous silica sol system, the silica sol will gradually thicken or eventually gel. This is because organic macromolecules with too large molecular weight will be adsorbed on the surface of silica sol nanoparticles, covering their surface charges, which will weaken the charge repulsion between silica sol particles, resulting in silica sol gel.
(5) Container opening. During the use of silica sol, if the container is left open for a long time, it will cause surface moisture to evaporate and precipitate silica crystals (in the form of fine needles or sand particles). This phenomenon generally does not affect the stability of silica sol, but may affect its use. It is necessary to use a very fine filter cloth to filter out these solid precipitates during use.

Silica sol: What are the key points for using silica sol
Silicasol is the aqueous dispersion of nano silica, and nano particles have huge specific surface area, which can produce good adsorption. This time, Baite New Materials will introduce the key points for using silica sol.
Why does silica sol have storage stability?
Silicasol is the dispersion of nano silica, and the particle size of nano particles is generally 3-150nm. The density of nano silica in silica sol is 2.2-2.3, while the density of water is 1, with a significant difference in density. However, we observed that silica sol can maintain suspension stability for a long time. Why is this?

Structure and stability of silica sol
Silica sol is a dispersion of nano silica particles in water or solvent. Silica sol is widely used in CMP polishing fluids, special coatings, papermaking, textiles, precision casting, refractory materials, catalyst carriers, precision ceramics and other fields.
